In this session, PPM4, I make some preliminary remarks offering some wider context for the project, as well as comments that link it to the most current writing I am doing, which, not coincidentally, continues to work out the concepts that propelled the project of 'Being and Learning.' Specifically, there is an ongoing attempt to understand the relationship between Being and learning as an event happening in 'the open' or 'the clearing.'
February 13, 2014 was the 10th anniversary of the original experiment that produced 363 phenomenological mediations, published as 'Being and Learning' (Brill: 2012). Each day between Feb 2014-15, I returned to the original meditations, and my commentary is documented here. And then, again, on February 15, 2024, on the 20th anniversary of the first days of the original experiment, I revisit and comment on a daily basis, once again.
This past week in my philosophy of education class we explored Arendt's category of the 'world' or what humanity shares in common. In some ways we can say without a common world, we have a deprived sense of 'humanity.' To be 'human' is build a world in common. In turn, there's a sense in which the 'open' or 'clearing' is the place where the world is built, or, as Arendt puts it, renewed and repaired
